Goal Statement and Action Plan
I am looking for a full time entry-level position as a Family Nurse Practitioner in a primary care setting. I will utilize the wisdom, knowledge and skills gained from my registered nurse career over the past ten years, along with the experience gained during nurse practitioner clinical over the past two years, to build a solid foundation for my nurse practitioner career.
Two and Five Year Goals
As the end of my basic nurse practitioner education nears, I have become aware of things that I do not know and understand. Therefore, I plan to work full time for a minimum of two years in a primary care setting, so that I can build the basis of my nurse practitioner knowledge and skills and become the best nurse practitioner for my patients. My career is somewhat limited due to my late arrival in the field of a nurse practitioner, so my goal is to make every year I practice count toward achieving my goal. I am determined to advance to the level of an expert nurse practitioner as quickly as possible by working full time; taking advantage of every educational opportunity presented in my work setting and continue to read professional journals. I will be a life-long learner. While in school, I developed a particular interest in Care theories. I am particularly interested in holistic care and how it positively impacts individuals, families and community. As a result, palliative care, pain management and end-of-life care are all fields of interest to me. In the next two years, I have been exploring each of these fields to determine if my strengths, skills, and passions are drawn to any one of them in particular. At this point, I will not be pursuing my Doctorate in nursing, however; I will be seeking certification in nursing education or a specialty in one of these areas of interest. Later on, I may continue additional education to enhance my goal to become an expert nurse practitioner.
In five years, I plan to be confident and comfortable in my role as a nurse practitioner. After this, I hope to be functioning at a high level of skill and influence among those I am working with. This could be the time in my career that I will want to pursue my Doctorate degree or certification in a specialty area, while being focused on becoming a change agent to provide the best possible care to enable and equip patients to attain optimal health and wellness until the day they die. Ultimately, I hope to be able to influence our country’s attitudes and approach to end of life care.
