Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Goals
While reflecting as to why I have chosen the path of a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner over other specialties, I have been fascinated by the intricate pathophysiology of health over life span for a very long time and I long to be a vital part in the primary health care in my surrounding community, while also having a strong passion to serve society. Attending nurse practitioner school has given me high aspirations within my education, which has allowed me to not only have personal growth, but professional growth as well.
After graduating from the University of Mobile with my Bachelor Degree in May 2012, I was accepted into the Master Degree Nurse Practitioner program at Auburn University. Throughout this nurse practitioner program, my clinical hours were spent in various healthcare settings such as; private primary healthcare, urgent care health facilities and different local hospital emergency rooms. This past fall semester was by far the greatest semester I had; where I had the greatest opportunity to do clinical hours in urgent care and take care of various patients of all ages. Those clinical hours were very beneficial and ignited a fire within me. The urgent care rotation confirmed my passion and gave me the motivation to pursue my dreams of being a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.
This past summer, I had the greatest opportunity to serve in a nurse practitioner internship program at a private primary care setting. I spent fifteen weeks providing direct patient care under the supervision of a nurse practitioner preceptor and a physician that owns the practice. These fifteen weeks provided me with valuable hands-on experience, where I was able to play an active role in the process from well-checked visits to sick visits. The close collaboration that I experienced with the physician was remarkable. I am always thankful for both the physicians and the preceptors eagerness to teach me new things about the primary healthcare system. The internship has opened up a huge door of opportunity as I pursue my career in the primary healthcare system.
I would like to become an advanced practice nurse so I can make a difference in the lives of patients throughout their life span. I want to be primarily involved in assessing, diagnosing, treating and ultimately creating a professional relationship with my patients. I will strive to take a holistic approach in providing care to patients of all ages by treating each patient with compassion, dignity and respect. Being an advanced practice nurse will give me the autonomy of practicing independently or in close collaboration with a physician, depending on the scope of practice wherever I work. I am eager to provide preventative care, which I believe is an extremely crucial aspect of healthcare. I want to encourage and empower my patients to take control of their health.
This being said, I am thrilled and delighted to be completing my education from Auburn University/AUM School of Nursing. From the very beginning, I had high expectations for this program and am positive that I have received an essential education that will allow me to be successful as a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. My passion is the core of why I wanted to become a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and this path is where my heart belongs.
Thank You for your consideration,
Nicole Thomas
